Smart Advice

Why choose a plasma/LCD display?

The features and specifications of plasmas lend themselves to use as displays in school entrances, receptions, assembly halls and other areas where high visual impact and quality is required. With higher contrast ratios and panel brightness than TFT, plasma technology lends itself well to video content.

What is a plasma display?

A plasma display (sometimes called PDP) is an emissive flat panel display where light is created by phosphors excited by a plasma discharge between two flat panels of glass.

What sizes are available?

Plasma is a more mature technology in this sector and, as such, screen sizes of up to 65" can be achieved. These sizes are larger than those achievable by LCD and they have a very narrow profile in comparison with normal TV screens.

Other features to look out for

Some screens feature advanced functions such as split and or multiple screen capability, portrait viewing options, ‘text ticker’ bars, multiple inputs and outputs, perhaps including remote control via a PC network. High Definition TV is just starting to become a feature of regular broadcasting and offers a significant improvement in image quality over the current norm. HD TV offers a higher resolution, digital image, with excellent colour quality and two to five times more detail than standard TV. This means that when viewing large images such as those on a plasma, you will find HD TV more comfortable to watch. If you want to watch HD TV make sure you choose a plasma which is ‘HD ready’. Warranties are also an important consideration with plasmas. Many plasmas come with a one year warranty as standard, and in some cases extended warranties are available.
